How Germicidal UV Light Works

September 08, 2020

Perhaps you realize that the sun’s ultraviolet light (UV) is to blame for your painful sunburn. But were you aware that a different type of ultraviolet light can be useful for keeping your residence’s air clean?

The sun emits two types of dangerous UV rays, UVA and UVB. These harmful rays can cause sunburn, skin cancer, wrinkles and other signs of premature aging.

There’s another concentration of UV light, referred to as UVC. While full exposure to this ultraviolet light isn’t good for your skin or eyes, it can safely be used to purify air, water and various surfaces.

Central Aire Heating & A/C Inc uses this light in a few of our systems to improve air filtration in Bossier City houses.

How Ultraviolet Light is Used

This specific wavelength is called “germicidal” because it destroys the DNA of bacteria and viruses. When pathogens travel through this light, they eventually cease to exist since they can’t spread.

This makes UVC light a strong substitute to chemical disinfection. Germicidal light is employed in a lot of disinfection procedures, such as medical laboratories and hospitals. It’s also used to clean drinking water and other liquids created in food processing.

It’s becoming more popular to purify air in houses in Bossier City. That’s because it can also eradicate common indoor contaminants including mold, mildew and bacteria. This is an extra advantage for loved ones who deal with seasonal allergies or asthma.

Using Germicidal UV Light in Your Residence

We install a germicidal UV light inside your HVAC system’s ductwork. Because the light is installed inside the ductwork, it makes it compatible with many heating and cooling equipment. This also keeps its beams securely restricted while providing powerful cleaning for your home’s air.

Contaminated air is purified in a two-step process, first moving through your air filter and then the UV light before circulating across your house. Even when your heat or air conditioning isn’t operating, these lights still operate to keep your air, ductwork and home comfort equipment clean.

This whole-house product is greater than a portable air purifier, which is limited to cleaning the air in a lone room. Portable air purifiers also can’t freshen your ductwork or the interior of your HVAC system. A clean HVAC system is usually a more efficient one that can even operate for an extended period of time. And, some portable air purifiers are notorious for producing ozone.

When considering getting a germicidal lamp for your residence, it’s essential to buy one that doesn’t create ozone. While ozone is good at eradicating odors and chemicals, it can also irritate your lungs and cause other respiratory symptoms.
