When winter hits and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, the majority of them can be traced back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself plenty of time to research and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get up there in years and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last two years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system might be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird dings coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises near the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home could start feeling stuffy and anyone with allergies may notice more symptoms. A few other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.

If any of these indicators sound like what you are feeling with your furnace, it could be time to start researching a new system.
